Under 17 World Athletic Championships

Today, on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek of the Czech Republic will open the 5th Under-17 World Athletic Championships to be held at the Municipal Stadium in Ostrava-Vítkovice.

For five days, Ostrava, the regional capital, will be the scene of a unique athletic meeting. More than 3,000 athletic talents from all over the world will be competing, defending the colours of almost 200 countries.

First, spectators will see a procession of all the competitors in the square in front of the Ostrava Town Hall. After the Czech national anthem, Lamin Diack, President of the International Athletic Federation, will deliver his opening speech. The IAAF flag will then be hoisted to the sound of the IAAF anthem, after which Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek will officially open the championship, launching its track and field events.

Procession and the inauguration of the championship will be held in Ostrava-Vítkovice, in Prokešovo Square, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
