Priority areas of the Czech RepublicĀ“s Presidency of the Council of the EU

The Czech Republic’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2009 is sure to be a challenge of exceptional importance for both political leadership and state administration in the Czech Republic. The way the Czech Republic copes with this task will have a major impact on its reputation and standing in Europe. Accordingly, the Czech Republic’s prime objective should be to ensure a competent Presidency. The ability to listen to other Member States, insight into and anticipation of their standpoints, the playing of a facilitative role and the adeptness at proposing compromises – these are all keystone qualities expected of the country holding the Presidency.
