The onset of totalitarian communist rule and the transformation of society

The international conference “February 1948 in Czechoslovakia: the onset of totalitarian communist rule and the transformation of society”, held under the auspices of the Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek, will be officially opened on February 25th, 2008, at 4 p.m., in Liechtenstein Palace (U Sovových mlýnů 4/506, Prague 1 – Malá Strana). The opening ceremony will be attended by the Prime Minister.

The conference is organized by the Modern History Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the National Archive, the Czech Government Office and the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava.

Over one hundred historians and political scientists who have been studying the history of totalitarianism will attend and more than 60 papers will be presented. Foreign guests, including Professor Vojtěch Mastný (USA), Professor Mojmír Povolný (USA) and Christiane Brenner (Germany) promised to participate. Witnesses of the February events and other distinguished guests will also take part.
