February 26, 2008: Premier Mirek Topolánek Reports Signing of US-Czech Memorandum of Understanding

On Tuesday, February 26, 2008, a Memorandum of Understanding between the US and the Czech Republic was signed, as expected, during an official visit to the United States by Premier Mirek Toplánek and his team. The Czech delegation left Prague on Monday. By signing the document, the Czech Republic has taken a major step on its way to the US Visa Waiver Program that regulates conditions for visa-free contact between the contractual parties. Premier Mirek Topolánek was quoted as saying: “My Government wanted to carry on expanding freedom and removing barriers.“ He described the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the United States as a historical moment, and the Czech Republic as a pioneer among all the countries of the European Union. The Premier went on to say that the Memorandum is characterized by three words: freedom, security and reciprocity.
