Meeting Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung Premier Mirek Topolánek Praises Mutual Trade Relations

On Friday, March 21, 2008, the visiting Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek met Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Premier Topolánek praised the role played by Vietnam in Asia, and appreciated the dynamic development in mutual trade relations.

The Czech Premier went on to say that the large group of Vietnamese citizens living in the Czech Republic has been making a sizeable contribution to this growth. Out of the many business projects implemented by the Czech Republic in Vietnam, the Premier singled out two as particularly important. The first one is the energy project with a capacity of 3000 MW, involving the Czech company Škoda Praha and the Electricity of Vietnam, with the Czech side prepared to grant a credit worth three billion USD. The other project representing the sector of financial services which the Premier mentioned is the deal of the Czech financial group PPF which opened its office in Ho Chi Min City in 2006 and which is now expecting to obtain a licence.

"In 2007 the mutual trade volume amounted to 253 million USD, which represents a year-on-year growth of 60.6 %. The Czech exports totalled 65.9 million USD with a growth rate of 132 %, while the Vietnamese exports reached 187.1 million USD, registering a 44.9 % growth rate," said Premier Mirek Topolánek. He added that at present both countries are expected to sign two contracts on the construction of a large brewery in the Ha Nam province, and on the delivery of technology for a brewery in Haiphong. The Vietnamese side has asked the Czech Government to raise its development aid in the education and health-care sectors. Specifically, this involves the construction of a rehabilitation centre for handicapped youth, support for Vietnamese apprentice training centres, and a greater number of scholarships to be granted to Vietnamese students. For more information on the topics discussed by Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek with his Vietnamese counterpart go to the section Press Releases (www.vlada.cz).
