Position of Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek on the Situation in South Osetia 

Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek is alarmed by the escalation of the conflict in South Osetia and has voiced his conviction that a genuine solution to the current situation is an end to military activities and a peaceful settlement of the crisis. The Czech Republic has been supporting Georgia on a long-term basis in its efforts to strengthen its sovereignty and territorial integrity within the internationally recognized boundaries. Premier Topolánek also conveyed this position during the first ever visit to Georgia by a Czech Prime Minister in May last year. According to current information, the Czech citizens staying in the Georgian territory are safe.

The Czech Republic expresses its deep concern over the deterioration of the situation and the outbreak of armed clashes in Georgia’s South Osetia. The Czech Republic calls on all the parties involved to stop their military activities immediately and to avoid further escalation of the conflict. The Czech Republic has been closely following the current developments and urges the international community to get speedily involved in solving the present situation.
