October 14, 2008: Extraordinary Meeting of the Czech Government;Briefing at 1:45 a.m.

On Tuesday morning, October 14, 2008, the members of the Government of the Czech Republic will meet at an extraordinary session. Its agenda includes a Bill on banks submitted by the Ministry of Finance. Amendment to the Act on banks is aimed at raising the maximum threshold of compensation for deposits from the Deposit Insurance Fund from 25,000 EUR to 50,000 EUR, and concurrent lifting of the limit under which compensation was to be paid only for 90 % of the deposit value. 

The submitted rule comes in response to the current situation on the financial markets. Its purpose is to strengthen depositors´ confidence in the health of banks in the Czech Republic. According to the proposed wording of the law, as much as 97% of deposits of all the entitled persons would be covered by the Deposit Insurance Fund.
