At 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek will meet US President George W. Bush in the Oval Office in the White House for talks on the anti-missile defence in Europe, the priorities of next year’s Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union with special focus on the EU-US Summit, and the current economic situation on the world financial markets. The Czech Premier will also thank President Bush for his role in the negotiations on the anti-missile defence system and will appreciate the involvement of the new EU member states in the US Visa Waiver Program. (The Czech Republic was the first country to have signed with the United States last February a Memorandum of Understanding on the incorporation of the Czech Republic in the Visa Waiver Program, in spite of criticism of this approach from the European Union.)

During his working visit to the United States, Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek will also have a number of other meetings and engagements. He will visit the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids in Iowa (at 6:00 p.m. on October 29, 2008), attend a ceremony marking the opening of the Czech National Building in New York (at 6:30 p.m. on October 30, 2008), deliver a speech and attend a follow-up discussion at the Florida International University (at 1:30 p.m. on October 31, 2008).
