K. Schwarzenberg and A.Vondra to Take Part in Meeting of GAERC

The EU ministers will discuss the developments of the last few weeks.

The 2921st session of the Council of the European Union - External relations - will take place on 26 and 27 January 2009, in the Justus Lipsius Building, Brussels, under the Presidency of Mr Karel Schwarzenberg, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

At this meeting also to take part Alexandr Vondra, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs.

The EU ministers will discuss the developments of the last few weeks. The General Affairs Council will primarily deal with the question of energy security in the light of events of the beginning of this year when gas supplies to the EU from Russia through Ukraine were cut off. On the agenda will be diversification of energy sources, Member State solidarity and other related issues.

The External Affairs Council will also discuss the gas crisis and deal with the relations between Ukraine, Russia and the EU. Furthermore, the ministers will again debate recent events in the Middle East and finally the intention of the new American President Barack Obama to close the prison at Guantánamo.

On Monday 26 January 2009 Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Alexandr Vondra will take part in the Meeting of Ministers for General Affairs and External Relations in Brussels.
