Hans-Rudolf Merz informs Topolánek about referendum results

Switzerland’s President today informed Czech PM and European Council President Mirek Topolánek about the positive result of the referendum on the prolongation and extension of the Agreement on the free movement of persons.

Speaking over the phone, Mirek Topolánek congratulated and thanked Hans-Rudolf Merz stating that the extension of the Agreement between the EU and Switzerland to include Romania and Bulgaria means that the last barrier to the free movement of their citizens has fallen.

“Especially these days when there are voices in the EU calling for new forms of national protectionism, it is important that even a non-member country has decided to participate in one of the common fundamental freedoms,” stated the President of the European Council after speaking with the President of the Swiss Confederation.
