Statement by Minister Štefan Füle on today´s Constitutional Court ruling

“The verdict of the Constitutional Court is not a surprise.

The Constitutional Court took into account the Government’s view, expressed in its statement of 29 September 2009, in which it said that the petition by the group of Senators concerning the Lisbon amendment to the Rules of Procedure, is in part unsubstantiated and in part contains requests which do not fall within the scope of competence of the Constitutional Court in these proceedings.

Even though, this filing is not directly related to the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty itself, the Government sees today’s decision as an important step towards the completion of its ratification process in the Czech Republic.

I appreciate that the Constitutional Court, as the supreme and independent constitutional institution, is dealing with such matters with an awareness of their urgency.

I am convinced that the second complaint which is still pending the decision of the Constitutional Court and that represents an obstacle of the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty in the Czech Republic will be proceeded with as soon as possible.“
