The statement by the PM on the position of the president on the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in the Czech Republic

I have taken note of the proposal of President Václav Klaus concerning the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, referred to in the Lisbon Treaty.

I regret that the President did not consult the Government with his plans beforehand.

The Government is, nonetheless, ready to consider them and is open to discussion. We will work towards finding a suitable solution with our European partners that would not endanger the completion of the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty. I rule-out it’s re-opening within the EU 27.

I reaffirm, that the Government of the Czech Republic had taken into account the possible impact of the Lisbon Treaty, including the disputing of the Beneš Decrees. We do not see any real risks in this respect. All the analyses available to the Government contradict such possibility.

I remain convinced that the Czech Republic will bring the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty to a successful conclusion, so that it can enter into force by the end of the year.
