Autumn 1939 – Student demonstrations and the closure of Czech universities

On the 17th of November, in addition to the events of 1989, we commemorate the memory of the murdered and imprisoned students of 1939. Following popular demonstrations, the German occupation authorities decided to close universities and punish student functionaries in an exemplary fashion.

The 14th of November each year marks the beginnings of parliamentary democracy in the independent Czechoslovak Republic. It was on this day in 1918 in Thun Palace in Prague that the first meeting of the Legislative Assembly of Czechoslovakia, the Revolutionary National Assembly, took place.

Battle of White Mountain 8 November 1620

390 years ago, armies of the Czech estates and the emperor Ferdinand II encountered in the Battle of the White Mountain. The defeat of the Czech estates meant the end of the rebellion against the ruler and it entered in the memory of the Czech nation as one of the most tragic moments of the Czech history and as the beginning of the "Dark Age".

Reunification of Germany 3 October 1990

The reunification of Germany in 1990 is one of the most important historical milestones of the European history after 1945. However, it is not possible to narrow circumstances preceding this historical event only to the period between November 1989 and October 1990, it means to the time period between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the act of the German reunification. The entire second half of 1980’ was an important political prologue to this process.
