Government Council for Human Rights

The Government of the Czech Republic’s Council for Human Rights (hereafter only the ”Council”) is an advisory body to the Government of the Czech Republic for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms issues within the jurisdiction of the Czech Republic. It was established by The Decree of the Government of the CR no. 809 of the 9th of December 1998. The Council monitors the upholding and supplementing of the Constitution of the Czech Republic, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms and other legislation governing the upholding and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Council further monitors the fulfilment of the Czech Republic’s commitments to protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, and in particular the commitments arising from: a. International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,b. International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,c. Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms,d. Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination,e. Convention on the Rights of the Child,f. Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women,g. Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishmenth. Framework Convention for the Protection of National MinoritiesThe Council President convenes meetings of the Council at least four times per calendar year. Its activities are governed by the Statute and the Rules of Procedure. The Council’s Secretariat is part of the organisational structure of the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic.
