Czech Presidency begins: Czech Government holds meeting with European Commission in Litomyšl

The Czech Republic assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July 2022. On the very same day, it received a visit of great significance to the path the Presidency will follow. The College of the European Commission arrived in the town of Litomyšl to hold talks with the Czech Government and representatives of both houses of the Czech Parliament.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala met with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in Prague on Thursday, 30 June 2022. The main topics of the working dinner were the work plan of the European Council during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU and the preparation of the informal summit to be held in Prague in October.

NATO leaders approve new strategic concept at the Madrid summit

The presidents and prime ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) countries meet at the NATO Summit in Madrid on 29 and 30 June 2022. They adopted a new NATO Strategic Concept, agreed to sign accession protocols with Finland and Sweden, and discussed further development of the Alliance and the strengthening of its eastern wing in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine and other threats. The Czech Republic was represented at the meeting by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Minister of Defence Jana Černochová and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala attended the European Council summit in Brussels, describing it as historic

Against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, another European Council took place in Brussels between Thursday 23 and Friday 24 June 2022. The topic of Ukraine and the impact of Russian aggression on the countries of the European Union was dominant. The European Council agrees to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status for EU membership, and addresses the issue of high energy prices, restrictions on Russian gas supplies to Europe and inflation. However, the leaders of EU27 also held talks with the leaders of the Western Balkan countries, discussed the deepening of the Union's relations with other non-member states in Europe and approved the introduction of the euro in Croatia from January 2023.

On Tuesday, 21 June 2022, Prime Minister Petr Fiala attended a working lunch with ambassadors of the European Union Member States in the Czech Republic. The working lunch was organised by the Ambassador of the French Republic to Prague, Alexis Dutertre.

The Government of the Czech Republic welcomed Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and the chairs of EP political groups. It was the first event held under the Czech Presidency.

Government presents logo, motto and priorities of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU

The Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU will have five main priorities, starting on 1 July and lasting until the end of the year. The Czech Presidency programme and its priorities were approved by the Government at a meeting on Wednesday 15 June 2022 and presented to the public together with the Czech Presidency logo.

Prime Minister Petro Fiala was received by Pope Francis in Vatican, they agreed on great support for the struggling Ukraine

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala was received by Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican on Thursday 9 June 2022. With the head of the Catholic Church, the Prime Minister discussed, among others, the situation in the Czech Republic and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka also attended the reception with the Pope. Prime Minister Fiala then held talks with the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris

On Tuesday, 7 June 2022, Prime Minister Petr Fiala met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The main topic of the meeting was the war in Ukraine and its impact not only on the European Union. It was the first bilateral meeting with President Macron since he took office.

The seventh Czech-Polish intergovernmental consultation was held in Prague

On Friday, 3 June 2022, Prague hosted a joint meeting of representatives of the Czech and Polish governments. At the seventh intergovernmental consultation, the Cabinets, headed by Prime Ministers Petr Fiala and Mateusz Morawiecki, discussed current societal issues. The meeting took place for the first time since August 2019 after a hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
